If you're not sure what to pick, go with Fluux Messenger if you want something like Discord but a bit less featured. or ConverseJS if you would like a fairly feature complete experience.

Try Gajim if you're on Windows or GNU/Linux - You can try Dino if you want a really simple GNU/Linux-exclusive option - Use Monal if you're on iOS or MacOS - Consider using Snikket if you're on Android, if you use F-Droid, look up Conversations or Cheogram
